By Belize Live News Staff: The political atmosphere in Belize is charged with anticipation as candidates from the People’s United Party (PUP), United Democratic Party (UDP), Alliance for Democracy (AFD), and independent contenders gear up for Nomination Day 2025. With general elections set for March 12, the official nomination process marks the beginning of a high-stakes race.
The ruling PUP is entering the race with a full slate of 31 candidates, while the opposition UDP, led by Shyne Barrow, is fielding 30 hopefuls. Tracy Panton’s AFD has introduced 15 candidates, adding another layer of competition to an already dynamic election season.
All eyes are on Corozal Bay, where the contest is expected to be particularly fierce. The PUP’s Thea Garcia Ramirez is set to challenge Elvia Vega Samos, a former PUP representative now running as an independent candidate. Vega Samos has secured the backing of Shyne Barrow and the UDP, further intensifying the race in this key division.
With nomination day underway, candidates are making their final preparations to officially enter the race, setting the stage for a competitive campaign season as voters prepare to head to the polls on March 12.
