By Belize Live News Staff: A PUP-organized land distribution fair in Burrell Boom Village is facing backlash after allegations that only registered voters of the area were allowed to apply for land. The event, held last Friday, was advertised as a land opportunity for first-time voters, which many believe unfairly ties land access to voter registration.
On Monday morning, Jules Vasquez of Sunup questioned whether land allocation should be linked to voting eligibility, arguing that land is a birthright, not a political incentive. Adding to concerns, a $50 application fee was also required, sparking criticism about the accessibility of land for lower-income Belizeans.
Prime Minister John Briceño responded to the controversy, admitting that the wording in the flyer may have been misleading but insisting that the intent was to help those who truly need land in the area. He compared it to politicians funding clinics, arguing that leaders work to serve the communities where they campaign.
Despite this explanation, critics believe the approach raises ethical concerns about using land as a political tool, with some pointing out that this isn’t the first village where such an approach has been taken. With elections around the corner, the debate over fair land distribution is likely to remain in the spotlight.
