By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño has hinted that the next general election may mark the conclusion of his political career. Speaking to reporters, Briceño explained, “If you were to ask me today, I would tell you that probably, quite likely, it is going to be my last election. At least that is my plan, my hope, and even within my family.” With this in mind, he expressed his commitment to maintaining strong leadership and stability within the People’s United Party (PUP) and the government.
Briceño made it clear that he intends to complete his current term without creating unnecessary disruption or distractions within the party. “I don’t want to be in a position where people start planning and scheming because they think I’m leaving. That is unacceptable to me,” he said. “I need to continue to manage the party and the government with the same strong hand, demonstrating full control of both.”
Looking ahead to the future of the PUP, Briceño expressed confidence in the party’s ability to sustain strong leadership, contrasting this with the current state of the opposition. He remarked, “What happened to the UDP is that after Dean Barrow, they had a very limited bench. I believe the PUP is in a much stronger position. We have a deep bench that includes leaders like Francis Fonseca, Cordel Hyde, Anthony Mahler, and Kareem Musa.” When asked if these were his top picks for leadership, Briceño simply said, “I’m just naming names.”
As he looks toward a potential exit from politics, Briceño remains focused on ensuring the party’s continued success and maintaining the stability of his administration. His comments signal a thoughtful and deliberate approach to leadership as he considers his final chapter in public service.
