By Belize Live News Staff: Placencia is grappling with shock and anger after a 34-year-old construction worker, Dane Percival Neal, was charged with the rape of a 13-year-old girl and then released on bail. The Belize Police Department’s failure to issue any official information about the case has only intensified the community’s outrage.
Residents have taken to social media to vent their frustration and disbelief, condemning Neal’s alleged actions and questioning how he could be allowed to walk free while awaiting trial. A particularly post describing Neal “smiling and enjoying his time” while on bail has resonated deeply, capturing the prevailing sense of injustice.
Beyond the anger, however, a deeper conversation is emerging. Residents are calling for an end to the culture of silence that often shrouds such sensitive issues, emphasizing the collective responsibility to protect children. “It takes a village to raise a child,” one online post declared, “but sometimes the silence of a village hurts a child also.”
Adding to the community’s anxieties, reports indicate that the victim and her sibling have been removed from their home and placed under the care of social services, raising further concerns about child safety in Placencia.
The lack of transparency from the police has further fueled speculation and frustration. Residents are demanding a thorough investigation and urging authorities to prioritize the victim’s well-being and ensure that justice is served.
