By Belize Live News Staff: Authorities are investigating a case of obtaining a money transfer by deception following a report made by a local businessman.
On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, around 10:00 a.m., a Belize City resident reported to the Precinct 2 Crimes Investigation Branch that he had been scammed while attempting to purchase two cell phones through a Facebook marketplace.
According to the report, the incident occurred on October 24, when the victim came across a listing for two Redmi Note 13 Pro cell phones priced at $220 BZD each. The items were posted on a Facebook page called “Good Items.” After contacting the seller via WhatsApp, the victim was instructed to transfer $440 BZD to an Atlantic Bank account under the name of Andre Nicholson. The phones were to be delivered by a personal courier.
Despite making the transfer on October 25, the victim did not receive the phones. Attempts to contact the seller were unsuccessful, as both the Facebook page and WhatsApp contact were deactivated.
Police have recorded the victim’s statement and obtained a copy of the online transaction. Investigations are ongoing.
