By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management (MBEDRM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP) Secretariat to strengthen sustainable marine resource management in Belize. The agreement marks a key milestone in advancing Belize’s blue economy through ocean accounting.
The first initiative under this partnership will develop a pilot ocean account for Ambergris Caye, funded by the UK Government, with the goal of expanding the program nationwide. The project aims to enhance local capacity for ocean data management, create a Coral Reef Extent and Condition Account to monitor reef health, and establish an Ocean Tourism Satellite Account to measure the economic contributions of marine tourism.
This initiative aligns with the Belize Sustainable Ocean Plan, supporting marine spatial planning, environmental protection, and sustainable development. Partners include various government agencies, the University of Belize, and community stakeholders.
The MOU represents a collaborative framework to ensure informed decision-making and economic resilience, fostering a sustainable future for Belize’s marine resources.
