Elevated river levels lead to temporary closure of Belize archaeological reserves

By Belize Live News Staff: Due to rising river levels, authorities have suspended visitations to several key archaeological reserves, the Institute of Archaeology (NICH) Belize announced today. The affected sites include the popular Xunantunich, Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), Barton Creek, and Nohoch Che’en reserves.

This precautionary measure follows concerns over safety and preservation, with elevated river conditions posing potential risks. Other archaeological reserves across Belize remain open for tourism and educational activities, NICH officials stated.

The Institute of Archaeology has committed to continuous monitoring of the situation and will issue updates as river levels change. Visitors are encouraged to check for further information regarding the reopening of these culturally significant sites.
