Rising river levels close Xunantunich and Belize’s famous cave systems

Elevated river conditions prompt archaeological site closures in Belize

By Belize Live News Staff: In response to rising river levels, the Institute of Archaeology has suspended all visits to the Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve and halted tours at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), Barton Creek, and Nohoch Che’en caves. The temporary closure, announced early on October 21, 2024, is a safety precaution due to increased water levels caused by recent flooding.

Xunantunich, a major tourist destination, and the popular cave systems are inaccessible until further notice. While these iconic sites are off-limits, the Institute of Archaeology has confirmed that all other archaeological reserves across the country remain open for visitors.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as conditions change. Visitors are urged to stay clear of the affected areas and seek the latest information before making travel plans. The safety of tourists and guides remains the top priority as Belize manages the impact of rising waters on its treasured historical sites.
