By Belize Live News Staff: Teachers in the Stann Creek District marked Belize’s Independence Day with a silent yet impactful protest during the official ceremony held in Dangriga Town at BTL Park on Saturday. The educators, supported by second-year primary education students, used the national event to highlight their continued struggles with stagnant wages despite the government’s proclamations of economic growth.
The demonstrators held placards displaying messages such as “Salaries minus increments plus inflation equal SUFFERING” and “Bread gone up, egg gone up, cheese gone up… teachers’ salaries gone down,” pointing to the ongoing disparity between the government’s positive economic narrative and the financial reality for Belize’s teachers.
Since 2020, teachers in Belize have seen little to no salary adjustments, even as inflation has driven up the cost of living. The protestors’ key concern centers around the government’s failure to deliver promised salary increments for 2021 and 2022, leaving them to cope with rising expenses on outdated wages.
The peaceful demonstration did not disrupt the Independence Day celebrations but added a layer of tension as the nation celebrated its 43rd year of independence. The silent protest sends a strong message that, while the government boasts of “historical prosperity,” the country’s educators continue to wait for their share of that progress.
Many attendees at the event expressed support for the teachers, acknowledging the importance of fair compensation for those who play a crucial role in shaping the nation’s future.
