By Belize Live News Staff: Fortis Belize, a leading power producer in the country, and the University of Belize have joined forces in a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing technical education and fostering local expertise in the energy sector. The partnership was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on August 22nd, 2024. The collaboration introduces two key initiatives: the Fortis Belize Internship Training Program (ITP) and the Lecturer Engagement Program (LEP).

The ITP offers students aspiring to careers in science, technology, and engineering hands-on experience within five crucial areas of Fortis Belize’s operations: Electrical Instrumentation & Control, Mechanical Maintenance, Civil Engineering & Dam Safety, Health, Safety & Environment, and IT Operations & Cybersecurity.
The LEP encourages collaboration between Fortis Belize and university lecturers, fostering research and innovation. This program also allows educators to gain practical insights into real-world scenarios, enriching their teaching. Furthermore, Fortis Belize will provide training and share its solar expertise to enhance the University of Belize’s solar park in Belmopan.

Dr. Vincent Palacio, President of the University of Belize, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that it aligns with the university’s focus on national development through industry collaboration and experiential learning.
Kay Menzies, President & CEO of Fortis Belize, emphasized the company’s commitment to investing in future talent and developing the next generation of local technicians and engineers.
