By Belize Live News Staff: A Belizean national is facing serious charges in neighboring Guatemala after being caught in a major drug and weapons raid in Melchor de Mencos, Petén.
Authorities arrested the Belizean, identified only as Mathew “N”, and a Guatemalan woman, Nydia “N”, during a joint operation by the Guatemalan police. The raid uncovered a significant cache of illicit materials, including two illegal pistols, various types of ammunition, over 600 suspected ecstasy pills, and 60,000 smuggled cigarettes.
Adding to the seriousness of the bust, a pickup truck bearing Belizean license plates was also seized at the scene, suggesting a potential cross-border criminal operation.
The arrests are a major blow to organized crime in the region and highlight the ongoing cooperation between Belizean and Guatemalan authorities to combat drug and weapons trafficking along the border.
Both individuals are now facing multiple charges related to drug trafficking, weapons possession, and smuggling.
