Gang violence in Belize City: Police vow to restore peace, residents urged to cooperate

By Belize Live News Staff: Police Commissioner Chester Williams recently spoke to Love News regarding the surge in crime in Belize City. While a State of Emergency (SoE) was briefly considered, Commissioner Williams clarified that such a measure is not currently on the table.

Instead, the Belize Police Department will focus on amplifying its presence and activities in areas most impacted by gang violence. The Commissioner underlined the department’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and security to the city.

In his address, Commissioner Williams also urged residents to respect the police as they carry out their duties. He expressed concern over reports of residents, particularly those connected to gang members, exhibiting disrespectful behavior towards officers, including verbal abuse and interference with police operations.

Commissioner Williams asserted that such conduct will not be tolerated. He emphasized the police’s pivotal role in maintaining law and order and reiterated their commitment to serving and protecting the community.
