By Belize Live News Staff: A fractured Opposition was on full display Monday as two of its five elected members—including Deputy Leader Hugo Patt—ghosted the opening of the national budget debate, forcing their leader to publicly address the embarrassing no-show.
Opposition Leader Tracy Panton did not mince words, declaring the absent representatives have a clear “duty” and “obligation” to the people who elected them.
“They will need to answer for themselves why they are not here,” Panton stated, calling their presence in the House a “social contract” with voters.
Panton swiftly shot down potential justifications, calling the recent village council elections an “unsuitable excuse” for missing the critical first day of the budget rebuttal.
The public rebuke highlighted potential cracks in party discipline, with Panton conceding she has limited power to enforce attendance. “I can’t compel anyone to do what they ought to be doing,” she admitted, though she confirmed the entire team had prepared for the debate together.
The question now is whether the absent members, Hugo Patt and Cayo West’s Miguel Guerra, will heed their leader’s public challenge and show up for the final two days of the debate.
