Central Building Authority issues stop order to Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez amid beachfront controversy

By Belize Live News Staff: Former Area Representative turned contractor Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez may soon face legal action after failing to comply with a stop order issued by the Central Building Authority (CBA) for unauthorized construction near Mile 3 on the George Price Highway. The stop order, served on May 20, 2025, required Martinez to cease all construction activity by May 23—a deadline that has now come and gone.

The CBA cited a breach of the Belize Building Act, Chapter 131 (Revised Edition 2020), noting that Martinez had begun erecting a structure without submitting plans or obtaining a building permit. The order warns that continued work at the site could lead to administrative sanctions and legal proceedings.

The situation has drawn heightened public attention, especially as Martinez is already facing criticism for fencing off a 2.5-acre tract near the former Belizean Beach—a historically beloved recreational area for Belize City residents. The move has reignited concerns over the steady privatization of coastal areas once freely accessed by the public.

In public comments, Martinez has defended both projects. Regarding the beach area, he argued that it was never a true recreational space due to swamp conditions and limited accessibility. “Here was never a beach environment,” he said, adding that his developments do not harm the environment or infringe on private land.

Martinez suggested that the backlash may be politically motivated due to his past role in government. “I da Belizean. I da wahn investor… I da contractor,” he said.

The Central Building Authority has not confirmed whether Martinez will now face court proceedings, but with the deadline expired, enforcement measures may be imminent
