By Belize Live News Staff: An internal audit has revealed that at least $80,000 has been misappropriated from the Spanish Lookout branch of the Transport Department, and officials fear the true figure may be even higher. The revelation comes as the Ministry of Transport launches both criminal and internal investigations into the suspected embezzlement.
CEO Chester Williams confirmed the troubling findings and said the matter has been handed over to police, with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) also involved. Williams acknowledged the depth of the issue, noting that while $80,000 has been identified, early indications suggest the total loss may exceed that amount.
“We’re hoping for an outcome like the Ivan Ayuso case,” Williams said, referencing the former public officer who was convicted of embezzlement and ordered to forfeit assets as part of his sentence. “If public funds are stolen, there must be accountability—and recovery.”
This latest scandal adds to growing concerns about transparency and oversight within government ministries. It also places pressure on the Ministry of Transport to implement tighter financial controls and restore public trust amid deepening scrutiny.
