By Belize Live News Staff: A post-mortem has confirmed that Selvin Sealey, 23, died from restraint asphyxia while in police custody—a finding the Prime Minister says must lead to more than just suspensions.
Sealey’s death, ruled a homicide, has shaken the island community of San Pedro and beyond. Several officers involved in his detention have already been suspended, but Prime Minister John Briceño insists that accountability must go further.
“I know the family, some are close friends. My heart is with them,” Briceño said. “This must be looked into very carefully, and if anyone is responsible, they must be charged.”
Sealey reportedly died after being restrained by police. The cause of death—physical restraint that restricted his breathing—has raised serious human rights and law enforcement concerns.
