Institute of Archaeology confirms sites open, urges caution for visitors

By Belize News Staff: The Institute of Archaeology/National Institute of Culture and History (IA/NICH) has announced the temporary closure of the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave due to elevated water levels. This popular archaeological site, known for its Maya artifacts and skeletal remains, will remain closed to visitors until further notice.

The IA/NICH is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as conditions improve. The organization prioritizes the safety of visitors and staff, and the decision to close the cave was made after careful consideration.

The ATM Cave, located in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, is a significant cultural and historical site. It attracts visitors from around the world who are interested in exploring its unique geological formations and learning about its rich Maya heritage. The closure is expected to impact the local tourism industry, but the IA/NICH emphasizes that the safety of visitors remains paramount.

Visitors who have already booked tours to the ATM Cave are advised to contact their tour operators for further information. The IA/NICH encourages the public to stay informed about updates regarding the cave’s reopening by visiting their social media FB page: https://www.facebook.com/IABelizeNICH.
