By Belize Live News Staff: Political temperatures are beginning to rise in Belize City as two well-known councillors prepare for what could become one of the People’s United Party’s most competitive internal contests in years.
Allan Pollard and Eluide Miller have emerged as the leading contenders for the PUP mayoral candidacy, setting the stage for a closely watched convention battle.
Prime Minister John Briceño says the race highlights the depth of talent within the party and believes both men have what it takes to lead the country’s largest municipality.
The Prime Minister acknowledged Pollard’s long-standing commitment to the party and noted that he has patiently worked his way through the ranks over the years.
Briceño described Pollard as a leader with vision, energy, and innovative ideas, adding that he has earned the respect of many supporters through his dedication and service.
At the same time, the Prime Minister pointed to Miller’s record on the Belize City Council, where he has served for two terms and gained valuable experience dealing with municipal issues.
Briceño described Miller as a humble and capable individual who has consistently demonstrated leadership qualities during his time in office.
While supporters on both sides are already beginning to rally behind their preferred candidate, the Prime Minister was careful not to endorse either man.
Instead, he emphasized that the party will work with whoever emerges victorious from the convention process.
With both candidates bringing different strengths and experiences to the table, many political observers believe the upcoming vote could be one of the most interesting internal contests leading up to the 2027 municipal elections.
For Belize City delegates, the challenge may not be finding a qualified candidate. It may be choosing between two of them.
