By Belize Live News Staff: Belmopan, May 5, 2025 — The Ministry of Transportation hosted a major stakeholder meeting on May 2nd, bringing together over 80 representatives from the public ground transportation sector to discuss ongoing reform efforts aimed at improving Belize’s national transit system.
The event, held in Belmopan, featured remarks from key officials including Minister of Transportation Dr. Louis Zabaneh, CEO Chester Williams, Chief Transport Officer Leon Gentle, and Belize Bus Owners Association President Andy Shaw, among others.
In his keynote address, Minister Zabaneh emphasized the importance of building a transportation system that is fair, efficient, and inclusive, calling it “an engine of national development.” He introduced a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) proposal that would see the consolidation of the national highway bus industry, allowing current operators to become shareholders alongside the Government of Belize. The initiative aims to reduce costs, modernize equipment, and upgrade terminal facilities.
The proposal was well-received, and the Ministry confirmed that further consultations will continue to refine and implement the plan.
The Ministry expressed gratitude to all operators in attendance, reaffirming its commitment to collaboration and continued progress in delivering a safer and more reliable public transportation system.
