By Belize Live News Staff: Father Edward Gallagher, a priest from County Donegal, Ireland with past service in Belize, appeared in Londonderry Magistrates’ Court last week to face charges of attempted sexual communication with a child. The 58-year-old priest, currently serving in the Clonleigh, Camus, and Leckpatrick parishes, is accused of attempting to make inappropriate contact with a child between April 2 and April 17, 2025.
Fr Gallagher was arrested in Derry after an incident with a group of so-called “paedophile hunters” who filmed their confrontation with him. The video, which quickly spread on social media, led to Gallagher’s arrest and subsequent appearance in court.
During the hearing, Gallagher spoke only to confirm his identity, and no application for bail was made. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) presented evidence connecting him to the alleged offences, and the case was adjourned until May for further legal proceedings.
This case has sparked public outrage, particularly due to Gallagher’s past involvement in Belize’s Cayo District, where he served the local community. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to address the serious allegations.
