By Belize Live News Staff: In what is being described as a landmark moment for the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU), more than 1,000 educators from across the country gathered in Punta Gorda for a four-day Annual General Meeting that emphasized structural reform, leadership development, and cultural immersion.
The meeting, which took place from April 5–8 at the Punta Gorda Sports Complex, was the longest in the union’s history. On the first day, around 500 teachers arrived for sessions focused on professional growth. By Monday, attendance had swelled, and delegates from all 10 BNTU branches were present for voting and strategic discussions.
The union used the extended time to begin revising its constitution—a move seen as necessary to adapt to modern challenges in education and labor representation. The new changes will be debated and refined ahead of next year’s AGM in Belize City.
New executive leaders were elected: Jorge Mejia of Corozal was chosen as First Vice President; Keesha Williams was re-elected as Treasurer; and Charlene Locario was selected as Secretary.
A highlight of the event was a cultural and educational tour of the Toledo District. BNTU President Nadia Caliz explained that helping teachers explore Belize’s regions firsthand is key to strengthening social studies instruction and fostering national unity.
Caliz remained reserved on whether she would seek another term as president. “This job is not easy,” she said, noting the weight of responsibility it carries.
