Teens accused in horse mutilation case granted bail pending sentencing

Police vow accountability as teens face multiple charges in shocking horse abuse case

By Belize Live News Staff: The five young men accused in the brutal and widely condemned chopping of a horse have been released on bail—despite strong public backlash and calls from law enforcement to keep them remanded. The defendants, aged 15 to 19, were charged with cruelty to animals and cattle theft following the circulation of a viral video showing a defenseless horse being hacked.

Four of the five pled guilty to the cruelty charges and are set for sentencing in May. All five denied the cattle theft charge, with a trial date set for June. The magistrate granted bail, placing them under conditions including no social media contact with the complainant and an 8:00 PM curfew.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams expressed disappointment in the court’s decision, stating the acts were “callous” and indicative of a much deeper social issue.

He also highlighted troubling revelations from court: one teen said he needed to care for horses at home and that rival gang members sometimes steal and abuse the animals in retaliation—suggesting that horses are being used as pawns in gang-related conflicts.

“These boys are using animals as part of a larger rivalry,” said Williams. “It’s disturbing, and I think this is something we cannot ignore.”

There are now growing calls for intervention from social agencies, animal welfare groups, and mental health professionals as Belize grapples with a disturbing trend of youth violence and animal abuse.
