By Belize Live News Staff: A recent wave of license plate thefts in Belize City has prompted an active police investigation, with authorities concerned the plates could be misused for criminal purposes. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said the police are working in partnership with the traffic department to address the issue.
Nine reports have already been filed from residents on Maris Deena Street, where thieves also made off with car batteries. While there’s no clear motive yet, Williams pointed out two key possibilities: the plates may be used to disguise vehicles during illegal acts, or may be taken by tourists as keepsakes from Belize.
“It’s something we have to look at from all angles,” he said. “We know sometimes tourists may want to take a plate as a souvenir, but it could also be a tool used for serious crimes.”
Williams urged vehicle owners to report any thefts to the police so they can be legally protected. If a stolen plate is later linked to criminal activity, victims with documented reports will not be held liable.
