Belize deports U.S. fugitives amid growing law enforcement cooperation

By Belize Live News Staff: Two American fugitives who had been hiding in Belize were recently located and deported following a joint operation between the Belize Police Department and the U.S. Embassy. The individuals were wanted in the United States for serious crimes, including rape and illegal weapons charges.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams emphasized that Belize continues to receive intelligence on international fugitives from its partners abroad and moves swiftly to act on credible information.

“Occasionally we get word of a fugitive, and when we do, we work with the U.S. Embassy to verify and then apprehend them. That’s what happened here,” Williams stated.

While the two recent deportations involved high-profile cases, Williams downplayed concerns over deportees in general. He said that many individuals returning to Belize are not on any local watchlists and are simply processed like other travelers.

The Commissioner reiterated Belize’s commitment to international cooperation, especially when it comes to keeping dangerous individuals from finding refuge in the country.
