Higher prices coming: CARICOM sounds alarm over U.S. trade policy

By Belize Live News Staff: With the U.S. imposing a 10% tariff on all imports—and higher rates for some countries—Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Chair Mia Amor Mottley says the entire region must brace for an economic shock.

In a strongly worded address, Mottley said Caribbean economies are “largely reliant on imports,” and this trade war will mean higher prices for everyday items—from groceries and electronics to restaurant meals and car parts.

She pointed out that many Caribbean citizens underestimate the ripple effects of global policies. “These problems are far away from me, and they don’t impact me,” she said, quoting common misconceptions. “But the reality is, it will impact each of us.”

Mottley called for unity and resilience while CARICOM countries work on strategies to lessen the blow.
