By Belize Live News Staff: The upcoming execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan has put the death penalty back in the spotlight, and the debate is one Belizeans know well.
President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that Hasan will be executed by firing squad on December 3, as scheduled, though he overruled a plan to livestream it. Hasan killed 13 people and wounded dozens in a 2009 attack at the Texas military base.
Here at home, the death penalty remains on Belize’s law books, with hanging as the method of execution. But Belize has not carried out an execution since 1985. Court rulings over the years have also ended the mandatory death sentence for murder, giving judges discretion in sentencing.
Every so often, especially after violent crimes that shock the nation, calls grow louder for Belize to resume executions. Supporters say it would deliver justice and deter violent crime.
Opponents argue the death penalty does not reduce crime and carries the risk of executing an innocent person, a mistake that can never be undone.
So we want to hear from you, Belize.
Should Belize bring back executions for the most serious crimes? Or is it time to abolish the death penalty for good?
