Belize opens tender for 80MW grid-connected solar project

By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment has launched a tender for the development of up to 80 MW of grid-connected solar plants, marking a major step toward expanding Belize’s renewable energy sector.

The selected partner will be responsible for financing, constructing, operating, and maintaining the solar facilities, as well as securing the necessary permits and ensuring compliance with Belizean regulations, environmental standards, and grid integration requirements.

This initiative is part of Belize’s goal to generate 75% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and represents the country’s first public-private partnership (PPP) in the energy sector. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has been appointed as the lead transaction advisor for the project.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Belize had just 7 MW of installed solar capacity by the end of 2023. The new project aims to significantly boost the country’s solar energy output.

Interested parties have until April 14 to submit applications.
