By Belize Live News Staff: To every young Belizean who feels like life has knocked them down too hard to get back up, look at Shyne Barrow.
At 21, he was a rising hip hop star with a platinum album. By his early twenties, he was behind bars, his music career on hold and his future uncertain. When he came home to Belize in 2009 after almost ten years in prison, many wrote him off.
But Shyne used that time to reinvent himself. He came back, studied, got involved in his community and eventually won a seat in the House of Representatives. He rose to lead a national political party and sat as Leader of the Opposition, something few could have imagined when he walked out of prison.
You don’t have to agree with his politics to respect the grind.
Today, as he turns 48, Shyne is still finding ways to give back. In April, he teamed up with the Borough President to host the East Flatbush Young Men’s Mentorship Expo held at SUNY Downstate, connecting young men with training and career advice. When he received the Key to Brooklyn, he said it was important to pass forward the love that community gave him to the next generation.

His story is not perfect. He has made mistakes and paid for them. But that is exactly why it matters.
Your past does not have to decide your future. You can fall, learn, rebuild and rise again.
Happy 48th birthday, Shyne. Keep putting a dent for Belize.
