By Belize Live News Staff: A social media video exposing unauthorized dredging activities in Belize Rural South has ignited public concern and prompted swift action from Area Representative Andre Perez. The video, which rapidly circulated online, depicted what appeared to be illegal seabed excavation, leading Perez to issue a firm condemnation and pledge legal repercussions for those responsible.
Perez confirmed that he has reported the incident to relevant authorities, emphasizing the need for stringent enforcement of Belize’s environmental laws. “Belize is a nation built on laws and standards, and such unauthorized activities will not be tolerated,” he stated.
The illegal dredging has raised significant environmental concerns. Experts warn that such activities can lead to severe habitat destruction, water pollution, and long-term damage to fragile marine ecosystems. The potential impact on tourism, fisheries, and the livelihoods of coastal communities, which heavily rely on Belize’s marine resources, has also become a major point of concern.
In response, Perez has called on the public to remain vigilant and report any further instances of illegal marine resource exploitation. He assured residents that stronger enforcement measures will be implemented to safeguard the nation’s marine environment from further harm.
Officials are set to launch a comprehensive investigation to identify the individuals or companies behind the illegal dredging. Those found responsible could face legal consequences, as authorities take a firm stance against environmental violations.
