By Belize Live News Staff: Four men were arrested following a swift police chase in Santa Elena on Saturday night after they allegedly held two young women at gunpoint and stole their belongings.
The robbery occurred around 9:20 p.m. on Perez Street as the victims were walking when two masked men rushed toward them from a parked taxi. One of the assailants, armed with a silver and black handgun, pointed it at them and demanded their belongings. The second suspect forcefully took their handbags, jewelry, and an iPhone 13 Pro Max before both fled toward Edward Juan Street, where their getaway taxi was waiting.
San Ignacio police, already patrolling the area, spotted two men entering a black Geo Prizm taxi on Requena Street and immediately pursued the vehicle. After a high-speed chase, officers intercepted the taxi on Edward Juan Street, where they found four men inside. Two suspects attempted to flee but were quickly captured, while the other two were caught trying to change their clothes inside the vehicle.
A search of the taxi uncovered a 9mm Zigana pistol with an extended magazine loaded with nine live rounds, along with the stolen handbags, phone, and cash. The four suspects, all between 20 and 25 years old, were taken into police custody.
Police confirmed that none of the men could produce a valid firearm license and that they now face pending firearm and robbery-related charges.
