By Belize Live News Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) launched its Plan Belize 2.0 manifesto on Thursday night in San Ignacio, unveiling a renewed vision for Belize’s future as the nation heads into the March 12 general elections.
Party leader and Prime Minister John Briceño addressed a crowd of supporters, highlighting the progress made over the past four years while acknowledging that more work remains.
“I am well aware there is more that needs to be done,” Briceño stated, emphasizing key pledges aimed at improving the cost of living, crime prevention, and access to education.
One of the most significant announcements of the night was the expansion of the government’s free education program. Briceño confirmed that Sacred Heart College in San Ignacio will be the next institution to offer free education from first to fourth form, starting next school year.
“I know we still have many Belizeans who are sacrificing to support their children,” he said. “That is why I am pleased to announce that right here in San Ignacio, effective next school year, Sacred Heart College will be the next school to enjoy free education.”
Briceño also acknowledged the economic struggles faced by Belizeans, particularly with the rising cost of living. He assured voters that his administration remains committed to making basic goods and services more affordable.
“I know the cost of living is still too high, and that we must work harder to make the basic goods and services that we need more affordable,” he stated.
Reflecting on the challenges of the 2019-2020 period, Briceño credited his administration for successfully stabilizing the country after inheriting a struggling economy.
“We all remember what it was like in 2019 and 2020, but look at where we are now. Just four years later, we have turned things around; we have steadied the ship of state.”
As Election Day approaches, the PUP’s campaign message is focused on continued economic recovery, social investment, and crime prevention, with the party positioning itself as the best choice to lead Belize through the next term.
