Historic Belize City church needs $2.2M for reconstruction after fire

By Belize Live News Staff: One week after a devastating fire gutted the historic Queen Street Baptist Church, the congregation has launched a rebuilding effort with an estimated cost of $2.2 million.

The fire, which destroyed the 200-year-old landmark, also caused damage to the adjoining primary school, displacing both students and worshippers. Now, church leaders are calling on the public to assist in restoring not just a building, but a piece of Belize’s religious and cultural heritage.

According to Pastor Lloyd Stanford, the rebuilding fund will not only cover the reconstruction of the church but also help replace essential items lost in the blaze. Despite the destruction, the church remains committed to its mission, with worship services temporarily being held in one of the school’s classrooms. Sunday school will continue outdoors in the schoolyard.

“The church has stood as a beacon of faith in Belize City for generations,” said Pastor Stanford. “With the support of our community, we will rebuild and continue our work.”

For those who wish to contribute, donations can be made to the church’s Building Fund at Heritage Bank, account number 1-0-2-1-2-0-6-2. Individuals seeking more information or direct ways to assist can contact Pastor Stanford at 610-1352 or Deacon Raymond Crown at 636-0163.
