By Belize Live News Staff: Students in Cayo got a firsthand look at their heritage last Friday, guided by the people who share it with visitors every day.
At Archaeology Day at Cahal Pech on Friday, October 16, members of the Cayo Tour Guide Association led student groups through the ancient Maya site in San Ignacio, explaining its history and archaeology.
The CTGA says archaeology is not just about the past. It is closely tied to Belizean identity, communities and livelihoods.
Belize’s ancient Maya sites are also a pillar of the country’s tourism industry, creating opportunities for tour guides, farmers, communities and businesses.
The association said it was especially happy to engage with young people and highlight the importance of understanding, protecting and responsibly sharing Belize’s heritage.
The event was hosted by the Institute of Archaeology of NICH, which the CTGA thanked for bringing together students, educators and tourism professionals.
