By Belize Live News Staff: With two uncontested victories already secured in Fort George and Pickstock, the People’s United Party (PUP) now requires just 14 additional seats to form the next government following the general elections on March 12th.
Henry Charles Usher and Anthony Mahler were both declared automatic winners in their respective constituencies after United Democratic Party (UDP) candidates failed to appear on nomination day. The absence of opposition candidates has not only given the PUP an early advantage but has also sparked concerns over the state of Belize’s democracy.
Political analysts have described the lack of competition in these key constituencies as a worrying sign of a weakened opposition, which could impact the country’s democratic processes. “When voters are denied the opportunity to choose between candidates, it undermines the very foundation of a healthy democracy,” one analyst noted.
PUP leaders, while celebrating the early victories, acknowledged the broader implications for the nation. “Winning unopposed is not something we take lightly. We remain committed to serving our communities, but we also recognize the importance of a strong opposition to ensure accountability and healthy political debate,” said a party representative.
With only 14 more seats needed to secure a majority, the PUP is well-positioned to retain power. However, the absence of competitive races in key divisions has led many to question whether Belize’s political landscape is becoming increasingly one-sided, raising concerns about the long-term health of its democracy.
