By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister and People’s United Party (PUP) leader John Briceño has expressed disappointment over Elvia Vega’s decision to run as an independent candidate in Corozal Bay, following her defeat in the party’s internal convention.
Speaking to reporters, Briceño emphasized that Vega had participated in a “fair and transparent” convention, where she was decisively defeated by Thea Garcia Ramirez. He rejected Vega’s allegations that certain individuals were unfairly prevented from voting. “I wish she would rethink. It’s still not too late. She can still withdraw her nomination at any time,” Briceño stated.
Briceño underscored the importance of party unity, particularly among women in politics. He argued that Vega should have stepped aside and supported Garcia Ramirez in the upcoming elections. “If she is a good PUP as she claims to be, then she and her supporters will support the candidate of the PUP. That’s the oath that she took,” Briceño stated, adding that Vega’s independent bid would not succeed.
Despite Vega’s decision, Briceño expressed confidence in Garcia Ramirez’s chances, praising her commitment to the people of Corozal Bay. He noted that the party had made several efforts to persuade Vega to remain within the PUP. Ultimately, however, Briceño acknowledged that the decision rested with Vega.
With the elections approaching, Briceño remains optimistic that Garcia Ramirez will emerge victorious, backed by a united PUP.
