Manuel Heredia Jr. announces comeback in Belize Rural South

By Belize Live News Staff: Former Minister of Tourism Manuel Heredia Jr. has officially announced his return to electoral politics, vying for the Belize Rural South seat under the United Democratic Party (UDP). After stepping away from the political scene in 2020, Heredia is now determined to reclaim the constituency he represented for four consecutive terms from 2003 to 2020.

Heredia’s candidacy comes at a time when the UDP faces internal divisions, with competing factions led by Shyne Barrow and Tracy Panton. Heredia, aligned with Panton’s camp, is expected to face not only the People’s United Party’s (PUP) incumbent Andre Perez but also Dani Lagha, another UDP candidate backed by Barrow’s faction. This unusual scenario could result in two UDP candidates on the ballot, potentially splitting the party’s vote.

Despite the internal challenges, Heredia remains confident in his chances, citing his long-standing connection with the people of San Pedro and Caye Caulker. Known for his contributions to Belize’s tourism industry during his tenure as Minister of Tourism, Heredia hopes to leverage his experience and reputation to win back the support of voters.

As the March 12 general election approaches, the competition in Belize Rural South is heating up. With the PUP’s Andre Perez campaigning on his achievements in infrastructure and environmental protection and Heredia aiming for a political comeback, voters will soon decide whether to continue with the current leadership or return to a familiar face.
