By Belize Live News Staff: A heated debate erupted in the House of Representatives on Friday as Opposition Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow launched a strong opposition against the appointment of Maria Rodriquez as Auditor General, citing concerns over her qualifications, promotions, and political connections.
Barrow alleged that the university from which Rodriquez claims to have earned her master’s degree does not accept Belizean students or offer an online business administration program. He further claimed that Rodriquez was promoted illegally twice, arguing that her appointment would weaken the integrity of the Auditor General’s Office.
“The PUP government promised to fix this office, yet the country has been without a functioning Auditor General for four years,” Barrow stated, accusing the administration of failing to deliver on its commitment.
His remarks drew a sharp response from Florencio Marin, Area Representative for Corozal South East, who dismissed Barrow’s claims as factually incorrect. Marin also refuted allegations that Rodriquez was his family member, stating, “Please scratch that off the record and preferably don’t say anything else. You are wrong.”
While the government pushes forward with the appointment, the opposition remains steadfast in its concerns, setting the stage for further disputes over the role of the Auditor General.
