Belize implements new transport regulations to strengthen border controls

By Belize Live News Staff: The Government of Belize has introduced new transport regulations aimed at improving border control and commercial transportation. The Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Regulation of Transport at Border Points) Regulations have been amended under Statutory Instrument No. 19 of 2025, published on February 3, 2025.

The Department of Transport implemented these changes after extensive discussions with municipal authorities in Corozal and Benque Viejo and Belizean commercial truck operators, who have long faced challenges due to insufficient regulations governing foreign cargo transporters.

The revised regulations reduce road service charges from $100 per vehicle axle to $30 per vehicle axle, applying equally to foreign and Belizean-registered cargo vehicles transporting goods into Belize. These changes are expected to boost revenue for border municipalities, which will be used for public road improvements and infrastructure projects. It will also prevent foreign cargo transporters from evading fees, creating a fairer system that benefits Belizean businesses, and strengthen the country’s commercial transport sector by ensuring more transparent and regulated border operations.

Minister of Youth, Sports, and Transport, Rodwell Ferguson, emphasized the significance of these reforms, stating: “These amendments reflect our commitment to strengthening Belize’s land transportation infrastructure while ensuring an efficient and transparent system for cross-border trade and travel.”

The Ministry of Transport remains dedicated to fair and effective transport policies that promote national economic growth and protect Belizean commercial interests.
