Guatemalan man shot and killed in Cotton Tree Village

By Belize Live News Staff: Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred last night in Cotton Tree Village, Cayo District, where a 30-year-old Guatemalan maintenance worker, Seferino Maas Pop, was shot and killed outside his home.

Police responded to reports of gunfire at 7:36 p.m., arriving at the scene to find Pop lying face-up in a hammock on his verandah, dressed only in blue boxers. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and was later transported to the Western Regional Hospital Morgue, where he was pronounced dead at 10:13 p.m.

According to initial investigations, Pop was resting in the hammock with his wife, 30-year-old Amalia Cho, when an unknown individual shouted “LEECO.” Pop reportedly responded, “Aha,” at which point the gunman opened fire, releasing approximately seven shots. Cho managed to flee inside the house and was left unharmed.

Police recovered seven spent 9mm shell casings at the scene. No suspects have been detained at this time, and authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.
