By Belize Live News Staff: A case of alleged property deception has been reported in Belize City, raising concerns about online transactions and fraudulent activities on social media platforms.
A 29-year-old Belizean businesswoman reported to authorities that she was deceived during an online sale of her iPhone 8 Plus, valued at $400 Belizean dollars (BCY). According to the victim, she had advertised the red-colored iPhone, bearing serial number F2MWD62YJWLK, on the Belize Buy and Sell Facebook page.
On December 10, 2024, she was contacted by an individual using the Facebook account “Jazmin Perrera,” who expressed interest in purchasing the phone. The buyer claimed to have made an online payment of $400 BCY from Belize Bank account number 213197367200000, with reference number 20008908039, to Atlantic Bank account number 2120048102 under the name Luis Itza. The alleged payment was backed by a receipt provided by the buyer.
Believing the payment to be legitimate, the businesswoman handed over the phone to a man described as being of Hispanic complexion, about 5 feet 5 inches tall, wearing a black helmet and a blue long-sleeved shirt with blue jeans. The man claimed to be a runner sent by “Jazmin Perrera.”
The next day, the victim contacted Mr. Luis Itza, who confirmed that no funds had been deposited into his account. Further investigation revealed the receipt was fraudulent, and Belize Bank verified that the reference number was invalid.
The businesswoman has filed a report with the police, who are investigating the matter.
