By Belize Live News Staff: Belizean shoppers can look forward to some holiday cheer as the government declares two GST-free weekends this December. On December 14–15 and December 21–22, goods typically subject to the 12.5% Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be exempt, giving residents a chance to save money during the busy holiday shopping season.
The GST-free weekends exclude specific items such as cigarettes, liquor, fuel, firearms, and vehicles. However, the waiver will apply to groceries and most retail goods, which is expected to provide much-needed relief for families preparing for Christmas celebrations.
“This initiative is intended to ease the financial pressures on Belizean households during the festive season,” a government spokesperson said. “We encourage everyone to make the most of this opportunity.”
Retailers are gearing up for increased foot traffic and are reminded to ensure proper adjustments in their pricing systems to reflect the GST exemption. Shoppers are advised to double-check their receipts to ensure compliance with the tax holiday.
These GST-free weekends mark a win-win for consumers and businesses alike, fostering increased sales while enabling Belizeans to stretch their dollars further. From stocking up on holiday groceries to finding the perfect gifts, these tax-free days come as a timely boost to the holiday spirit.
