By Belize Live News Staff: A 65-year-old man was fatally struck in a hit-and-run incident in Corozal Town on Friday night, raising questions from his family about the circumstances surrounding his death. Collet Tillett was hit near the intersection of 3rd Street South and 5th Avenue. The driver fled the scene, leaving Tillett critically injured. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Tillett’s family has expressed frustration over the lack of information provided by authorities. Despite the area being equipped with surveillance cameras, police informed the family that no footage is available. “That’s a lie. The area is full of cameras,” said
Shahjida Moreno, Tillett’s niece, speaking from Cozumel, Mexico. “The police are not assisting us or helping us understand what happened.” Moreno also criticized the police’s delayed response, noting that her family was not informed about the incident until hours later.
Tillett was remembered as a kind and helpful member of the community, often seen running errands or assisting with odd jobs. “He was a happy person. He didn’t bother anyone,” Moreno said, adding that his love for dancing and socializing made him a beloved figure.
The family is demanding a thorough investigation and is urging authorities to ensure accountability. They have also questioned the functionality of surveillance systems in the area and called for better transparency in the handling of such incidents.
