BNTU warns GOB: Delayed teacher payments unacceptable amid rising cost of living

By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) has issued a strongly worded statement demanding the Government of Belize (GOB) address delays in the payment of increments and allowances owed to its members.

In the release, the BNTU expressed frustration, stating, “It has been three months since the start of the school year, and once again, teachers have been shafted by the lack of movement from Management and the Ministry of Education regarding the payment of increments and allowances.”

The union revealed it has “registered its concerns with both the Ministry and Managing Authorities” but said no progress has been made.

Citing the rising cost of living, the BNTU noted, “Our members are outraged as the cost of living continues to escalate while the responsibilities and demands of the profession continue to mount, yet they are expected to function as if all is well.”

The union is demanding that when payments are finally made, they must be retroactive and tax-free.

The statement concluded with a firm warning: “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! We will no longer continue to beg for what is rightfully owed to our teachers. The ball is in your court, but please note that your play has already been drawn up.”

The union has pledged to monitor developments closely as it presses for action.
