By Belize Live News Staff: Authorities have successfully intercepted a daring heist in the Corozal Free Zone, recovering over 4 million pesos—equivalent to more than $400,000 BZD. The burglary, which unfolded on Sunday, involved four suspects, two of whom are now in police custody.
According to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, the suspects gained access to the establishment with the aid of a security guard. Utilizing advanced technology, including drones, police were able to locate and apprehend two individuals believed to have orchestrated the heist.
“They conducted searches utilizing drones, which led to the recovery of a bag containing some pesos, Mexican pesos along with a few Belizean dollars and U.S. currency,” Commissioner Williams explained. The money was then transported to the Corozal Police Station for verification. The total value of the stolen assets is believed to exceed $400,000, with ongoing investigations to determine the full extent of the theft.
The Commissioner revealed that the detained suspects are being questioned while efforts to track down the remaining two suspects continue. “We’re hoping to bring them into custody soon and close this case swiftly,” Williams added.
Investigators have identified a troubling element in the heist: collusion from within. “From what we’ve gathered, the security guard who was on duty at the establishment played a role in the burglary,” said Williams, confirming that the guard has been taken into custody.
The heist marks one of the largest in recent memory in the Free Zone.
