By Belize Live News Staff: The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) has issued a stern warning as Tropical Storm Sara looms near Belize’s coastline. As of 6:00 a.m., Sara was stationed about 160 miles southeast of Belize City, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. Although currently stationary, the storm is expected to begin a slow movement toward Belize by tonight, with landfall anticipated on Sunday.
Residents across Belize, including the cayes, are bracing for potentially dangerous conditions, including heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and possible flooding. Preliminary data indicates over 15 inches of rainfall in Middle Caye since Thursday, with additional rainfall of 3 to 8 inches expected. NEMO has cautioned that this could lead to life-threatening flooding in parts of the country.
The storm’s impact extends beyond rainfall. Winds could reach 50 mph at landfall, with stronger gusts potentially causing damage to weaker structures. Additionally, a storm surge of 1 to 2 feet may affect areas along the coast. NEMO has urged all residents, especially those in flood-prone areas, to finalize emergency preparations and stay informed through official channels.
