Controversy erupts over resort built on ancient Maya ruins in Belize

Belize City mother hospitalized with severe injuries after son's attack

By Belize Live News Staff: A private resort constructed on what is believed to be an ancient Maya archaeological site in Teakettle Village, Cayo District has drawn criticism from locals and cultural advocates. The controversy erupted after a promotional video of the resort circulated online, highlighting the site’s transformation.

Residents and heritage experts have raised concerns about the sale and development of historically significant land, arguing that such sites should be safeguarded as national treasures rather than commercialized. Critics also point to the challenges faced by Belizeans in acquiring land for personal use, contrasting this with the apparent ease with which foreign investors have obtained and developed the property.

Authorities have yet to comment on whether the site underwent proper archaeological assessments or if the development violated any cultural preservation laws.
