Tropical Storm Sara takes aim at Belize: Coastal communities urged to prepare

By Belize Live News Staff: Belizeans are being urged to prepare for the arrival of Tropical Storm Sara, which is forecast to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous sea conditions to the country this weekend. A Tropical Storm Watch is currently in effect for the coastline stretching from Belize City to Placencia, and authorities anticipate this will be elevated to a warning later this morning.

At 6:00 am today, Sara was churning approximately 205 miles east-southeast of Belize City, carrying maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. The storm is tracking westward at 9 mph, and forecasters anticipate it will bring tropical storm conditions to Belize by Saturday. Coastal regions and southern Belize are expected to bear the brunt of the storm’s impact.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize has issued an Excessive Rainfall Watch for the entire country, warning of the potential for flooding over the next 48 hours. Residents are strongly advised to monitor weather updates closely and take necessary precautions, including securing property and preparing for potential power outages. Those in low-lying or flood-prone areas should be particularly vigilant and consider relocating to higher ground if necessary.

Small craft owners are urged to remain in port, as a Small Craft Warning is in effect due to the threat of high seas and squally conditions.

The storm is expected to bring overcast skies and persistent rain throughout the weekend, with temperatures hovering in the low 80s along the coast and inland.
