Paul Smith Jr. awaits bail after murder charge dropped

By Belize Live News Staff: Paul Smith Jr., 20, was recently freed of a murder charge stemming from the 2022 shooting of 19-year-old Tyreak August in La Democracia. The case was discontinued after the Crown entered a nolle prosequi. However, Smith remains behind bars, facing charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

His attorney, Ronnell Gonzalez, argued that Smith should not remain in prison, given that the murder charge has been dropped. Gonzalez has filed a bail application, but the hearing is set for November 15. In the meantime, Smith remains on remand. Gonzalez expressed optimism about his client’s case, noting that full disclosure on the firearm charge is still pending and involves other individuals present at the time of the firearm’s discovery.
