Hawksworth Bridge reopens after extensive rehabilitation

By Belize Live News Staff: After six months of intensive rehabilitation, the iconic Hawksworth Bridge in San Ignacio is back in service. The 75-year-old suspension bridge, which had been closed for urgent repairs in May, has undergone a complete overhaul. Works included the replacement of suspension cables, girders, the deck, and the footpath.

At the reopening, Minister of Infrastructure Development Julius Espat highlighted the bridge’s significance: “It’s a historic bridge that connects San Ignacio to the rest of the country. We prioritized it because of its importance to the community and the country at large.”

Engineers estimate that with regular maintenance, the bridge could remain operational for another 50 years. Espat emphasized the importance of upkeep, noting, “If you do absolutely no maintenance, the lifespan will be significantly shorter.”
