By Belize Live News Staff: A property dispute in the Secret Beach area of Ambergris Caye has ended in a fatal shooting. Authorities report that Matthew Moses was shot multiple times on Friday afternoon following an alleged confrontation over land.
Moses, who had recently returned to the island after visiting family in Libertad Village, was reportedly involved in a heated altercation with a caretaker overseeing the disputed property. According to initial reports, the disagreement escalated when Moses allegedly became aggressive toward the caretaker.
The dispute appears to have stemmed from ongoing property issues between Moses and the property’s owner, an American national who has since fled the country. Eyewitnesses say the situation worsened when Moses allegedly threatened the workers and their families. In response, the suspect, who held a licensed firearm, reportedly opened fire, fatally wounding Moses.
The police have confirmed that the suspect is in custody and that the weapon used in the incident was legally registered.
